Laura met Alicia for a few quiet drinks on Friday night to celebrate her thirty-third birthday. The last month had been the longest of Laura’s life and she needed a night out to blow off some steam.

“Laura, what’s going on?” Alicia asked after the waitress had brought them two cocktails. “I know we haven’t seen each other in a while. I’ve been a shit friend. What’s wrong?”

“Apart from turning thirty-three?”

Alicia’s eyes narrowed. “You’ve never worried about your age before,” she said, stirring her drink. “What’s bothering you?”

“I didn’t want tonight to be depressing… I probably shouldn’t get into it.”

“Laura, whatever it is… It’s eating away at you. Just tell me.”

Laura sighed. “I broke up with Natalie.”

“What?” Alicia almost choked on her drink. “When? Why? The last I heard you were out salsa dancing and driving all the men there crazy. What changed?”

“It’s… She’s…” Laura didn’t know why she was struggling to tell her best friend. “On the first day of school, I walked in to teach my class… and there she was, sitting in the back row.”

“Nooo….”

Laura nodded.

“I’m shocked… I don’t know what to say.”

“You and me both,” Laura said with a small laugh. “Just my luck.”

“Did you… were you two…”

“No, thank God. We hadn’t slept together,” Laura said before she took a sip of her drink.

“So that ended things rather quickly then?”

“Yes as much as I didn’t want it to… It had to be done. At least she was eighteen,” Laura said with a slight smile. “That’s about the only positive thing I can find to say right now and she somehow managed to get herself transferred to a different English class.”

“But she’s still in your school.”

“Right. It doesn’t really change anything except make my days a little easier. I don’t think I could handle seeing her every day and not being able to…” Laura’s voice trailed off.

She hadn’t realized how hard she’d fallen for Natalie until recently. She thought she would’ve been able to forget about her after a few days of not seeing her but things just seemed to be getting worse. Laura still searched for her face in the hallways.

“Well, there’s only one solution,” Alicia said, taking Laura away from her thoughts.

“What’s that?”

“You need to get back out there. Find yourself a rebound girlfriend.”

“No. No way. I’m not in the right headspace,” Laura said, stirring her drink.

“Yeah but that’s the whole point of a rebound fling. There’s nothing serious about it.”

“Alicia, I just don’t think I’m ready for that…”

“Let’s go to a gay club and see… It can’t hurt,” Alicia said.

Laura knew she wasn’t going to win this battle. “Okay. Let’s go.”
